Highlanders Football Club has appointed former Zimbabwe international Benjani Mwaruwari as its new Head Coach following successful negotiations between the club and the ex-striker.
The appointment comes after recommendations made by the club’s sponsor, who has provided both financial and strategic support to Highlanders throughout the 2025 season.
Club officials confirmed that discussions with Mwaruwari focused on strengthening the team’s technical capacity and long-term football development.
In a statement, Highlanders acknowledged the sponsor’s role in guiding the club toward engaging Mwaruwari, citing his extensive experience in the game as a key factor in the decision.
“Consequently, the club and Mr Mwaruwari have come to an agreement that will see him take up the role of Head Coach,” the club said. “We believe his expertise will help steer the club in the right direction in terms of performance and excellence.”
Mwaruwari is expected to play a central role not only in first-team performance but also in broader areas such as playing strategy, youth development, and player development pathways, as the club looks to build sustainably both on and off the field.
Highlanders expressed optimism that the appointment aligns with the sponsor’s long-term vision for the club and called for continued support for the new Head Coach ahead of the upcoming season.
The club also thanked its curator, Mr J. Nkomo, for his contribution throughout the negotiation process, praising his guidance and input in helping steer Highlanders in a positive direction.
Highlanders concluded by expressing gratitude for the patience and unwavering support shown by their sponsor, noting that such backing would not be taken for granted as the club prepares for the new season.
Highlanders had appointed Thebog Senong as Head coach for the upcoming season.
However, he was forced to return to his base in South Africa before taking charge of any match.
