Bulawayo– The resurgence of Highlanders FC will face its toughest examination this afternoon when they host log leaders CAPS United at Barbourfields Stadium in what is undoubtedly the standout fixture of the Week 9 round of matches.
Popularly known as Bosso, Highlanders remain unbeaten so far this season, having registered seven draws and a crucial victory over Chicken Inn FC last week.
While their resilience has been commendable, questions remain over their ability to convert draws into win, something they will need to address against a high-flying CAPS United side.
CAPS United, who sit at the top of the table, have suffered just one defeat this season, a loss to Ngezi Platinum Stars.
They head into the encounter brimming with confidence and will be aiming to tighten their grip on the summit.
Head coach Takesure Chiragwi is expected to demand a disciplined and clinical performance from his charges as they seek to break down Highlanders’ stubborn defence.
“They got their first win. Congratulations! Now they are waiting for their first defeat on Sunday, a home defeat. Yaaa neh,” Caps United wrote on their X handle.
Highlanders FC will be banking on in-form rookie Mongameli Tshuma to rise to the occasion once again, with the young forward expected to play a pivotal role in unlocking the opposition defence and maintaining his impressive run of performances as Bosso chase a crucial result.
Meanwhile, in Harare, traditional giants Dynamos FC welcome a tricky ZPC Kariba FC outfit at Rufaro Stadium.
Dynamos supporters will view this as a golden opportunity to climb the standings.
A convincing victory could see them leapfrog both Hardrock FC and Scotland FC into second place, or even go top, should CAPS United stumble at Amagumeni.
The race at the top is beginning to intensify, with several teams positioning themselves as serious contenders as the season gathers momentum.
All eyes will be on Barbourfields this afternoon as Highlanders seek to turn promise into points, while CAPS United aim to prove their title credentials.
