The Young Women for Economic Development (YW4ED), one of the affiliates of the ruling Zanu PF party, is set to hold its inaugural annual business conference and celebrate five years of existence at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC) on August 31.

The conference is expected to be graced by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, while thousands of YW4ED members from the country’s 10 provinces are expected to attend.

YW4ED Harare Provincial Chairperson, Councillor Rufaro Matsika, said the organisation was ready for the milestone event.

“We are happy and ready to have our inaugural business conference as well as celebrate the five years we have been in existence. We are expecting thousands of our members from all the country’s 10 provinces to come and meet our President, Dr ED Mnangagwa, and our patron, Dr Amai Auxillia Mnangagwa,” said Cllr Matsika.

She said the organisation had benefited from mentorship and guidance from the Zanu PF Women’s League, particularly in promoting women’s participation in empowerment, development and leadership.

“We are also grateful for the Women’s League mentorship under their wing. We continue to get guidance on how to rise up and take space in the ecosystem of empowerment, development and leadership,” she said.

Matsika said recruitment remained one of the organisation’s key priorities, adding that YW4ED was working to create an environment that encouraged young women’s participation and inclusion in politics.

“I am the YW4ED Harare Chapter Chairperson, being an advocate of female participation and inclusion,” she said.

Matsika, who is also the Ward 18 councillor for Borrowdale, said the organisation was proud of the growing number of its members holding leadership positions across the country.

She said more than 60 YW4ED members were serving as councillors, while others had been elected as Members of Parliament.

She also highlighted the role of the organisation’s founder and chairperson, Hon Tatenda Mavetera, who is also a Government minister.

Over the past five years, YW4ED has implemented and supported various economic empowerment projects across the country’s provinces, including mukando initiatives, goat pass-on schemes and borehole drilling projects.

The organisation has also participated in Zanu PF and national programmes since its inception and has been involved in campaigns aimed at raising awareness around various national programmes and initiatives.

The inaugural conference is expected to provide a platform for young women to network, discuss economic empowerment opportunities and celebrate the organisation’s growth over the past five years.
