Chikomba East Member of Parliament and Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Hon AdvocateFelix Tapiwa Mhona has urged youths to take sports seriously and view it as a source of employment.

Hon Advocate F.T. Mhona made the call during his address when the constituency hosted the annual F.T. Mhona Sports Tournament in Duvhurwi over the weekend.

“Let me urge you, our youths, to take sports seriously as it can be a viable source of employment and a pathway to success.

“Sports is not just about having fun and recreation, it is also a powerful tool that can be used to put your community on the map and open doors to new opportunities,” Hon Advocate F.T. Mhona said.

He further highlighted that it is crucial to nurture talent from the grassroots level to unlock the full potential of sports in the community.

“We need to nurture talent from the grassroots level, providing our young people with the necessary support and resources to excel in sports and make a name for themselves.

“It is heartening to see young talent emerging, and I must mention Vincent Chivende, a Grade Four pupil who officiated the Queens soccer final, showcasing his talent and potential in the sport.

“He showed confidence in whatever he was doing and such talent must be nurtured. I promise to facilitate for him to pursue his refereeing career to the highest level, ensuring he gets the necessary support and resources to excel.

“Gone are the days when education was the only pathway to success, today, sports is a viable career option that can bring about financial stability and recognition,” Hon Minister Mhona said.

In an interview with thevhayeya.com Vincent Chivende said he loves soccer very much.

“I am a massive Manchester City fan, and I have to say, refereeing is where my heart is. I love being in the thick of the action, making split-second decisions, and keeping the game fair and square,” Vincent Chivende said.

Chief Chivese seized the opportunity to urge the youths to desist from drug and substance abuse, emphasizing its devastating effects on their lives and futures.

“It is heartbreaking to see our youths today succumbing to drug and substance abuse, undoing their potential and bright futures,” Chief Chivese lamented.

He added, “The youths must use platforms like this tournament to socialize, build meaningful relationships, and most importantly, showcase their talent.

Chief Chivese concluded by applauding Hon Mhona for organising such a prestigious tournament.

The tournament, which drew teams from wards across the constituency, was notable for its inclusive spirit, with every participating team receiving a prize and a kit from the preliminary round onwards.

Ward 17, Masasa, celebrated a double delight as they triumphantly scooped both the Male and Queen soccer gold medals, with each team receiving a $2000 USD cash prize, a soccer kit, and a trophy respectively.

Gokomere edged Ward 15 in the Netball final and scooped gold medals and a sum of $1300 USD whilist loosing finalist were awarded $800 USD.

Minister Mhona also took the opportunity to encourage the winning teams to use their prize money wisely, investing it in meaningful ways that would benefit their teams and communities.

Health checks were also conducted during the tournament, providing participants and spectators with an opportunity to assess their health and wellbeing.

The tournament was oversubscribed, attracting a diverse range of participants, including parastatals within the Ministry of Transport such as ZINARA, CAAZ, TSCZ, and Airports Company of Zimbabwe, as well as traditional leadership, Chief Chivese, Maromo and ZANU PF leadership.
