SCOTTLAND FC’S CAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE JOURNEY COMES TO AN END
By Milton Marima
Zimbabwean champions Scottland FC have been eliminated from the CAF Champions League after suffering a 3-0 defeat to Angola’s Petro de Luanda in the second leg of their second preliminary round tie on Friday.
Scottland travelled to Luanda with a 2-0 advantage from the first leg at the National Sports Stadium in Harare, where goals from Khama Billiat and Knowledge Musona had put the Zimbabwean side within touching distance of the group stages.
However, Petro de Luanda produced a strong comeback in front of their home supporters at the 11 de Novembro Stadium to overturn the deficit and win the tie 3-2 on aggregate.
Ruben opened the scoring in the 18th minute to give the Angolan side hope of turning the tie around. Scottland managed to hold on to their advantage until half-time, but the hosts continued to press after the restart.
Petro’s persistence paid off in the 67th minute when Jorge Pereira scored the equaliser on aggregate, leaving Scottland under increasing pressure as the match entered its closing stages.
The decisive moment arrived in the 85th minute when Pedro Aparício found the back of the net to complete Petro’s comeback and secure their place in the 2026/27 CAF Champions League group stage.
For Scottland, the defeat brings an end to their continental campaign, denying the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League champions an opportunity to reach the group stages on their debut campaign in Africa’s premier club competition.
The Mabvuku-based side had shown promise by eliminating Eswatini’s Nsingizini Hotspurs in the first preliminary round before securing a memorable first-leg victory over Petro de Luanda.
Despite their elimination, Scottland will take lessons from their continental experience as they turn their attention back to domestic football and their title ambitions in Zimbabwe.
Petro de Luanda, meanwhile, advance to the group stage after a dramatic turnaround that underlines the challenge of protecting an aggregate lead against experienced continental opposition.
