Zimbabwe’s Young Warriors produced a commanding performance at the National Sports Stadium on Wednesday, defeating Mauritius 2–0 in the first leg of their Under-23 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying tie.

From the opening whistle, Zimbabwe took control of the contest, dominating possession and territory while constantly putting the Mauritian defence under pressure.

The Young Warriors moved the ball confidently through midfield and spent much of the first half in Mauritius’ half.

Their dominance eventually produced the opening goal in the 34th minute, when David Chigwada found the back of the net to give Zimbabwe a deserved 1–0 lead.

Zimbabwe continued to control proceedings after taking the lead.

Mauritius struggled to build sustained attacks, with the hosts’ midfield pressure and defensive organisation limiting the visitors’ opportunities.

The second half followed much of the same pattern, with Zimbabwe continuing to dictate the tempo and search for a second goal.

That breakthrough came in the 60th minute, when Nisbet Joe Muzenda doubled Zimbabwe’s advantage.

Muzenda’s goal gave the Young Warriors a comfortable 2–0 lead and further rewarded their dominance in the match.

Zimbabwe continued to press forward after the second goal, while Mauritius found it increasingly difficult to create clear chances.

The visitors managed very little attacking threat, with Zimbabwe maintaining control until the final whistle.

The Young Warriors also impressed defensively, keeping Mauritius away from dangerous areas and protecting their clean sheet.

Captain Corbin Mthunzi provided leadership at the back as Zimbabwe maintained their organisation throughout the contest.

Zimbabwe’s midfield was particularly influential, helping the hosts retain possession and control the rhythm of the game.

The attacking players also showed good movement and energy as Zimbabwe repeatedly tested the Mauritian defence.

The victory gives Zimbabwe an important 2–0 advantage going into the second leg in Mauritius on 6 October.

However, the Young Warriors will know that the tie is not yet over.

They will need another disciplined performance away from home to complete the job and progress to the next stage of the qualification campaign.

For coach Marc Sánchez, the match also provided an important opportunity to assess a group of young players who are being developed as part of Zimbabwe’s pathway towards the senior national team.

The performance at the National Sports Stadium will give Zimbabwe confidence ahead of the return leg, having demonstrated their ability to dominate possession, control the match and convert their pressure into goals.
