South African Referee Under Fire After Scottland FC’s CAF Champions League Victory

By Milton Marima

South African referee Abongile Tom has come under intense criticism following controversial officiating decisions during Scottland FC’s 2-0 victory over Angola’s Petro de Luanda in the CAF Champions League.

The Zimbabwean champions secured a crucial first-leg advantage at the National Sports Stadium in Harare on Sunday, October 18, 2026, but the match was overshadowed by two disputed decisions by the match official.

The first major talking point came less than a minute into the match when Tom showed Petro de Luanda goalkeeper Hugo Marques a straight red card for a challenge on Scottland attacker Panashe Mutimbanyoka outside the penalty area.

Tom judged that the goalkeeper had denied an obvious goalscoring opportunity, but replays reportedly raised questions about whether defenders had recovered sufficiently to cover the goal. The early dismissal left the Angolan side playing with ten men for almost the entire match.

Controversy resurfaced when Petro’s replacement goalkeeper appeared to handle the ball outside the penalty area while attempting to deal with an attacking threat. Tom allowed play to continue, a decision that drew criticism from commentators and supporters who felt the goalkeeper should have been penalised.

Despite Petro’s defensive resistance in the first half, Scottland eventually made their numerical advantage count after the break. Khama Billiat opened the scoring in the 66th minute, finishing a delivery from substitute Walter Musona. Knowledge Musona then doubled Scottland’s lead around ten minutes before full-time, giving the Zimbabwean champions a valuable two-goal cushion ahead of the return leg in Angola.

The controversy has placed Tom under renewed scrutiny, particularly because he had faced criticism over penalty decisions during the MTN8 final between Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates earlier in October.

Meanwhile, reports published on October 20 indicated that Petro de Luanda had taken their grievances to the Confederation of African Football (CAF), seeking an investigation into the officiating. There were also reports that Marques claimed Tom apologised to him after the match and admitted the red-card decision was a mistake. That claim has not been independently confirmed here, and there has been no verified final CAF ruling on the matter.

Scottland has now travel to Angola for the second leg, carrying a 2-0 advantage as they pursue a historic place in the CAF Champions League group stages.

However, the debate surrounding Tom’s decisions has become a major talking point following the Zimbabwean club’s important victory.
