Harare – Three City of Harare employees died this morning when a decommissioned clarifier at the Morton Jaffray Water Works, near Norton, collapsed while they were working on it, the municipality confirmed.
In a brief public notice issued shortly after the incident, the City of Harare said initial reports indicate the workers were inside the clarifier when the structure gave way.
The statement expressed heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones affected by this devastating loss.
“The City of Harare is investigating the incident. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones affected by this devastating loss,” the notice read.
According to the notice, Police have taken charge of the scene, and municipal officials pledged full cooperation with authorities as details are gathered.
No further information on the identities of the victims or the exact cause of the collapse has been released pending family notification.
“The City of Harare is fully committed to cooperating with the authorities as investigations continue into this tragic event,” the statement added.
The municipality emphasized that the incident will not impact water production or quality for residents.
“We assure residents and the general public that the incident does not in any way affect water production and quality,” the notice concluded.
The community has been asked to join in offering support and compassion to those grieving, and further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police is yet to issue a statement.
