The late National Hero Brigadier-General (Rtd) Jonathan Willie Hungwe will be laid to rest tomorrow at the National Heroes Acre, with President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa expected to preside over the burial ceremony.
In a statement, the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage said burial proceedings will begin at 0700 hours, with mourners expected to be seated by that time.
“The Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage wishes to inform the nation that the late National Hero Brigadier-General (Rtd) Jonathan Willie Hungwe will be laid to rest on Friday, 6 March 2026, at the National Heroes Acre,” the ministry said.
His Excellency, the President, Cde Dr E.D. Mnangagwa is expected to preside over the burial ceremony.
The ministry said the cortege will today depart from the late national hero’s farm in Mwenezi following a provincial ceremony before passing through Ngundu and Rutenga business centres where brief stopover ceremonies will be held.
“Today, 5 March 2026, after the provincial ceremony, the cortege for the late Brigadier-General (Rtd) Jonathan Hungwe will leave his farm in Mwenezi, pass through Ngundu and Rutenga Business Centres for other brief ceremonies, then proceed to Masvingo,” the statement read.
The body is expected to arrive in Masvingo at around 1400 hours before being airlifted to Harare.
According to the ministry, the body will be received at Manyame Air Force Base at about 1600 hours before being taken to Charles Gumbo Barracks where it will lie in state.
“Burial proceedings will commence tomorrow, Friday, 6 March 2026 and mourners should be seated by 0700hrs. The public is invited to attend in large numbers to give a befitting farewell to this illustrious Son of the Soil and freedom fighter,” the ministry said.
