Honorable Felix Tapiwa Mhona, Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, has issued a heartfelt statement mourning the tragic loss of lives in the devastating Kuwadzana accident, offering condolences to the bereaved families and loved ones of the victims.

“It is with deep sorrow and sadness that I have received news on the fatal road traffic crash that occurred on Thursday 31st of October 2024 at Kuwadzana 7 turn-off.

“Tragically six people died whilst five others were injured when the driver of a commuter omnibus failed to give way and collided with a haulage truck.

“On behalf of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development and my own behalf, I convey our heartfelt condolences to all the bereaved families.

“We mourn the demise of young men and women who perished in the crash.

“Our thoughts are with all the families of the people who were killed in the crash and our prayers are with those injured as they continue to receive treatment and care.

“We wish them speedy recuperation,” said Hon Mhona.

He further described the driver as reckless and announced that he will face a culpable homicide charge.

“The accident is yet another call to all transport operators, motorists, and members of the public to adhere to road traffic rules and exercise caution on the road.

“Whilst the traffic lights at the intersection were working, it is concerning to note that driver of the commuter omnibus proceed when he was supposed to stop.

“This was reckless and thus a blatant violation of our road traffic rules and regulations. Consequently, the driver is being charged with culpable homicide,” said Min Mhona.

He also warned Transport operators, motorists and the public to adhere to road traffic rules and regulations.

“I wish to remind and warn all transport operators, motorists and members of the public that the Ministry will take stern measures to preserve the safety and security of the commuting public.

“Let me also take this opportunity to ensure the nation that the Second Republic is committed to formulating robust legal, policy and administrative mechanisms to improve the country’s Road Safety Performance,” said Mhona.

In a related story, a Pungwe Breweries UD truck lost brakes and rammed into vendors’ stalls, on Thursday causing widespread destruction.

The accident occurred near Sakubva terminus on Thursday evening, leaving two people feared dead and several others injured.

The injured victims were referred to Victoria Chitepo Hospital for treatment.
