The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development’s Legal Advisor, Cde Advocate K. Magaya, has revealed that Honourable Mhona extended an invitation to Singapore Airlines to launch a new route to Victoria Falls, citing Zimbabwe’s rich tourism, mining, and agricultural sectors as compelling reasons, at a recent meeting in Singapore.
The Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Honourable F.T. Mhona (MP), who is attending the 2025 Global Aviation and Maritime Symposium (GAMS) in Singapore, has held a bilateral meeting with his counterpart, the Minister of Transport of Singapore, Honourable J. Siow, on the sidelines of the GAMS.
Advocate Magaya revealed to thevhayeya.com that during the bilateral meeting, Hon Mhona reminded his Singaporean counterpart of the existing Bilateral Air Services Agreement between the two countries and extended an invitation for Singapore Airlines to launch Harare-Victoria Falls route.
“Honourable Mhona thanked his counterpart for extending an invitation to the GAMS and commended Singapore for establishing a robust intermodal transport network. Honourable Mhona recalled that Zimbabwe and Singapore reviewed a Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) in 2014 which establishes reciprocal rights for airlines to operate between Zimbabwe and Singapore.
“In that vein, he recalled that Air Zimbabwe used to fly from Harare to Singapore where it would proceed to Beijing and at some point in time, to Kuala Lumpur. He shared recent developments on the upgradation, expansion and modernisation of the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport and that it has capacity to handle wide bodied aircraft and handling 6 million passengers annually. By dint of that, Honourable Mhona invited the Singapore Airlines to launch a route to Harare and /or Victoria Falls given the attractive tourist destinations in Zimbabwe and opportunities in the mining, agricultural and tourism sectors,” he said.
Victoria Falls is one of the major tourist destinations in Zimbabwe and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region, and establishing a direct route would greatly facilitate travel, making it easier for tourists to visit this iconic wonder.
The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development recently announced the commencement of the rehabilitation of the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Highway, a move that will enhance road connectivity and facilitate easy access to the tourist destination for those traveling by road.
Minister Mhona, underscored the abundance of potential investment opportunities in the transport sector, specifically in rail, aviation, and road infrastructure, including technological installations like tolling and smart ticketing.
Advocate Magaya also revealed that the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development is actively practicing the government’s initiative of engaging and re-engaging with the global community to attract investment and foster partnerships.
“Further, Honourable Mhona reiterated the commitment of Zimbabwe to engage and re-engage through MOUs in the Field of Transport and Transport Infrastructure and MOU in the field of Aircraft Accident and Serious Incidents Investigation which were shared by Zimbabwe through diplomatic channels,” said Advocate Magaya.
Hon Siow, the Minister of Transport of Singapore, received Honourable Mhona warmly and thanked him for accepting the invitation extended by the Singapore Ministry of Transport.
Honourable Siow outlined the evolution of the transport sector, highlighting advancements in maritime, aviation, road, and rail transport, and shared the city-state’s ambitious vision for a smart, carbon-free, service-oriented, and seamlessly connected transportation system.
The two Ministers indicated that they would maintain ongoing engagement and collaboration, fostering continued dialogue and cooperation between their respective transport ministries.
The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development successfully hosted the African Integrated (AFI) Aviation Week from May 26-30, 2025, on the sidelines of which it signed several significant bilateral agreements with countries including Eswatini.
