Zimbabwean football legend and former St Paul’s Musami captain Felix Mbidzo has died at the age of 89.
Mbidzo died at his home in Musami, Murewa, with his death confirmed on Friday, October 9, 2026.
Family spokesperson Kamwere Mandudu confirmed the death, saying funeral arrangements were still being finalised.
Mbidzo was part of the historic St Paul’s Musami side that made Zimbabwean football history in 1966 by becoming the first club from outside Harare and Bulawayo to win the country’s top-flight league championship.
The team, popularly known as the “Davis Babes” because it was led by Catholic priest Father Antony Davis, defied expectations to claim the championship and cement its place in the history of Zimbabwean football.
Mbidzo, who played as a striker and captained the side, was a key member of the championship-winning squad.
He played alongside several notable footballers of the era, including Jawett Nechironga and James Nxuma.
His contribution to the Davis Babes’ historic triumph earned him a lasting place among the pioneers of Zimbabwean football.
Mbidzo’s death marks the passing of one of the players who helped lay the foundations of the country’s football history.
