A girl from Kazangarare, Karoi, reportedly took her own life by jumping into a pool early this week after she could not bear the fact that a relative had outperformed her in the 2024 O Level results.

The girl, whose name is withheld, sat for her Ordinary Levels last year and was disappointed that her friend and cousin had outperformed her by achieving 6 passes, while she managed only 4.

“We heard that she was counseled by her parents and siblings throughout the night, but it seems she still could not accept it. The following morning, she did some household chores before going to the pond and jumping into the pool to her death,” said a close relative who preferred to remain anonymous.

The police’s sub-aqua unit was called in, and her body was taken to Karoi Hospital for a post-mortem examination, where no foul play was observed.

The police always advise people to seek alternative solutions to deal with their problems instead of resorting to suicide.
