The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development held its 6th Session of the Line Minister’s Public Entities Corporate Governance Oversight Meeting from 18 November to 21 November in Mutare.

The workshop, in accordance with Section 33(4) of the Public Entities Corporate Governance Act, is designed solely to monitor the progress of public entities, assess their objectives, conduct, plans, and ensure compliance with their strategic plans to promote good corporate governance.

The Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development Hon Mhona highlighted that the public entities should not be limited to holding AGMs but they have to shift their focus to result orientated goals.

“It is thus clear from the foregoing that the reason why we should meet is not to merely to tick the boxes and say for instance, we submit Board minutes, we submit Board resolutions, we hold AGMs.

“We want to deviate from that approach so that we dive deep into your plans for us to appreciate your conduct as an entity, your plans and demonstrate the extent of compliance with your strategic plan,” he said.

Hon Mhona hastened stakeholders to act professionally and avoid witch hunting to allow the growth of public entities.

He highlighted that as a Ministry they remain guided by the bold transformative leadership of His Excellency the President of Zimbabwe Dr E. D Mnangagwa.

“As we engage, we should applaud the Government, under the leadership of His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Cde. Dr. E.D. Mnangagwa, for recognizing the importance of corporate governance and for establishing appropriate constitutional frameworks for its implementation,” he said.

Speaking on the sidelines, the Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs and Devolution Hon Adv Misheck Mugadza said, “Let me take this opportunity to employ the Minister of Transport to expedite the completion of the following projects that has been planned for our dear Manicaland, Birchenough Bridge-Murambinda Road, Chipinge Mt Silinda Rehabilitation, Nyanga- Ruwangwe, Mutare Airport, Forbes Border Post expansion and Christmas pass bypass.”

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport Eng J. P Makumbe said every public entity should work to make their objectives a success.

“In this meeting we expect every public entity to achieve this by clearly articulating how they have compiled with their obligations under the requirement of good corporate governance practises as provided,” she said.

Public Entities Corporate Governance Oversight Meeting was attended by ZINARA, NRZ, CAAZ, ACZ, NHS, Air Zimbabwe, CMED and TSCZ.
