The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development held a successful Wellness and Sports Day at Belvedere Teachers College in Harare yesterday, aiming to promote health and wellbeing among staff members.
In recognition of November as Men’s Health Month, the Ministry of Transport hosted the event in Harare, under the theme “Cultivating a culture of wellness:Promoting team building, enhancing health and wellbeing”, emphasizing the importance of health and wellbeing for all employees, both men and women.
Minister of Transport, and Chikomba East MP, Hon Felix Tapiwa Mhona, who was the Guest of Honor emphasized the importance of regular wellness and sports events to promote staff health and productivity.
“As you can see today, we are hosting this event within the ministry to promote health and wellbeing among our staff, and we hope to make such events a regular occurrence.
“This month, November, is Men’s Health Month, and we have taken heed of that. That is why we have organised this Wellness and Sports Day, partnering with health organisations like PSMAS, who are here doing health checks, including Blood Pressure and sugar level checks. Importantly, we have also made sure to include our women in this initiative, because health and wellness are just as important for them,” said Hon Mhona.
He commended the staff for their enthusiastic participation in the Wellness and Sports Day activities.
“It is heartening to see our staff coming together to prioritize their health and wellbeing. Events like these are crucial for our overall productivity and job satisfaction.
“As a ministry, we are committed to creating a healthy work environment, and initiatives like today’s Wellness and Sports Day are a step in the right direction. Additionally, a healthy workforce is a productive workforce. We are investing in our staff’s health and wellbeing, and we expect great things from them.
“Let us take a cue from today’s event and make healthy living a part of our daily lives, both at work and at home,” Hon. Mhona encouraged.
Mrs Lorraine Mbodza, from the Ministry of Transport, who spearheaded the event, had this to say,
“First and foremost, I would like to thank the Hon. Minister for his support. We are grateful, as a Ministry, to have the honor and privilege of being led by such a humble and supportive Minister.
“Today, we managed to hold a successful wellness and sports tournament here at Belvedere Technical Teachers College. As we all know, this month we are focusing on Men’s Health, and often men are secluded from such important issues. We had health organisations here providing services specifically for men, as well as other general services for all of us.
“This day is important, as the Minister earlier alluded, because a healthy employee brings good results at work,” she said.
She concluded by thanking teams from the Ministry of Lands who agreed to take part when invited, stating that the Ministry of Transport enjoys good cordial relations with other ministries.
Tapiwa Rubhabha from Chikomba East also commended the ministry for holding such a commendable event.
“On behalf of the participating teams from Chikomba East, allow me to thank Minister Mhona, our MP, and the Ministry for hosting such an event.
“As a netball coach, this is a good platform for exposure for the girls and other teams that participated today. We have learned and benefited a lot.
“We started with aerobics, which was a good exercise. It is a simple and helpful exercise, and I believe we will take notes back home and do it in our communities,” said Coach Rubhabha.
The Wellness and Sports Day was oversubscribed with participants drawn from parastatals within the Ministry of Transport, including ZINARA, Airports Company of Zimbabwe, National Railways of Zimbabwe, Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe, Air Zimbabwe, CMED, National Handling Services, and participants from the Ministry of Lands.
Each participating team walked away with a prize for taking part in the event.
