Murder charges against suspected Guruve serial killer Anymore Zvitsva have increased from 19 to 25 after the court unsealed additional cases during his latest court appearance.
The 33-year-old is now at the centre of one of the most prolific and grisly homicide investigations in Zimbabwe’s recent history.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the expanded charges on Thursday, saying intensive investigations in Mashonaland Central Province had linked Zvitsva to more victims than initially recorded.
“Police can conclusively confirm that he is now facing 25 counts of murder. In addition to these, he faces three counts of attempted murder, two counts of rape, and one combined charge of rape and attempted murder,” Commissioner Nyathi said.
Beyond the rising number of victims, authorities are now probing a more sinister dimension to the case, the possibility of a body-parts trade.
Detectives are following leads suggesting that Zvitsva may not have acted alone and could have been motivated by financial gain linked to ritual killings.
“We are conducting investigations into allegations that there were accomplices assisting Zvitsva. Furthermore, we are verifying reports that certain individuals may have purchased body parts from the suspect,” Nyathi said.
The revelations have sent fresh shockwaves through the Guruve community, which had already endured months of heightened anxiety as the number of victims linked to the suspect continued to rise.
Zvitsva’s alleged killing spree is believed to have spanned more than a year, with a surge in violence recorded in late 2025.
In one December incident, the murder of a mother and her daughter sparked a massive manhunt that ultimately led to Zvitsva’s arrest in early January 2026.
Following his arrest, the suspect reportedly confessed to several killings.
However, as forensic teams and investigators reviewed missing persons reports and recovered human remains in the region, the charge sheet expanded from 19 counts to the current 25.
Zvitsva appeared briefly in court this week, where five additional murder charges were formally added.
Due to the gravity of the offences and the ongoing nature of investigations, he was further remanded in custody and is expected to return to court on February 3, 2026.
Police have appealed to members of the public with information on alleged accomplices or buyers of body parts to come forward, assuring citizens that authorities will leave no stone unturned in dismantling what is suspected to be a wider criminal network.
