The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has announced a temporary and partial closure of several roads in Bulawayo to allow for essential rehabilitation works, with the exercise set to run from February 16 to April 30, 2026.
In a public notice issued Monday, the Ministry said the works will affect key sections along Masiyephambili (J.M. Nkomo Drive), stretching through connecting routes up to Victoria Falls Road.
“The temporary and partial closure of the above-mentioned routes is necessary to facilitate essential road rehabilitation works scheduled for this period,” the Ministry said.
Authorities indicated that traffic management measures will be implemented to minimise disruptions, particularly in the busy urban corridor.
For light vehicles, traffic will be diverted around construction zones using controlled stop-and-go mechanisms, while residential access will remain open to ensure that property owners can reach their premises.
“As this is a heavily built-up area, light traffic will be rerouted around work zones, while residential routes remain accessible for property access,” the Ministry explained.
Heavy vehicles have been directed to use alternative routes.
“All heavy vehicles must reroute via Masiyephambili Drive to access the Central Business District,” the notice stated, adding that access along Old Falls Road will be restricted to local residents only.
The Ministry urged motorists to exercise caution and comply with all safety measures to protect both road users and construction personnel.
“To ensure the safety of motorists and construction teams, the public is strongly advised to obey all posted traffic signs, follow instructions from officials, and drive at reduced speeds through affected areas,” said the Ministry.
Motorists have also been encouraged to plan for longer travel times during the rehabilitation period.
The Ministry apologised for the inconvenience caused, saying the project is part of ongoing efforts to modernise and improve the country’s road infrastructure.
“We regret any inconvenience caused and appreciate the public’s patience as we continue to improve the national road network,” the Ministry said.
The rehabilitation programme forms part of broader infrastructure upgrades being undertaken across the country under the Government’s road modernisation drive.
