Vice President Chiwenga tracks the progress of roadworks by touring the city’s roads, assessing the improvements made by local contractors in improving the city’s infrastructure.

Accompanying Vice President Constantino Chiwenga were Honourable Felix Tapiwa Mhona, Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development; Honourable Fredrick Shava, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade; Honourable Jenfan Muswere, Minister of Information and Publicity; and several officials from the government and Ministry of Transport.

The Vice President stated in a statement that the government aims to align infrastructure improvements with Vision 2030.

“These projects are part of our commitment to fulfilling the vision of transforming Zimbabwe into an upper middle income economy by 2030,” he said.

He added that Zimbabwe is upgrading infrastructure in preparation to host the August SADC Summit.

“These infrastructure improvements are being carried out in preparation for Zimbabwe’s hosting of the SADC Summit in August.

“We had the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) and it has concieded with the hosting of the SADC countries.

“We are going to make sure that the hosting of the event will be a success,” he said.

The Vice President set a deadline of the end of June for the completion of the Greater Harare Access Roads project.

“The project must be done by 30 June.

“We are on track and they will meet the target, I will be with them monitoring progress.

“I do not see anything that can derail this program.

“Local contractors were awarded the contracts in line with the government’s policy of empowering local businesses, in line with the mantra, “Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo,” said VP Chiwenga.

The Vice President stressed that contractors must work around the clock, working 24 hours a day to meet the deadline and complete the project.

Honourable Felix Tapiwa Mhona, Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, noted that the tour testifies to the hard work and commitment of the Second Republic under President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

“The tour by VP Chiwenga tracking progress of roadworks today shows the work ethic of the 2nd Republic under the able leadership of the President Dr, Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa.

In addition, Honourable Felix Tapiwa Mhona, Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, underscored the need to complete the construction and rehabilitation of roads by the end of June.

“I concur with the set targets by the Honourable VP that by the 30th of June we will be done.

“You will see us 24 hrs monitoring the projects,” said Hon Mhona.

Minister Mhona assured that he would closely monitor the progress of the project to ensure achieving the target of completion by June.

“As Ministry of Transport we are going to superitend the projects.

“So we are now going to be shifting from day tours to night tours so that we monitor and achieve,” said Hon Mhona.

Three local companies, Fossil Contractors, Bitumen Company, and Exodus and Company, are undertaking the Greater Harare Access Roads project.

In addition to the Greater Harare Access Roads project, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development is also working on other projects, such as the construction of the VVIP Pavilion  at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, which is scheduled to be completed by July 31st of this year.
