The Minister of ICT, Postal and Courier Services Hon Tatenda Mavetera has said that Zimbabwe is taking bold strides to transition from a consumer to a creator of technology, accelerating the implementation of its Smart Zimbabwe blueprint.

She made these remarks at the recent Computer Society of Zimbabwe Summit 2025 held at Radisson Blu in Livingstone, Zambia.

The summit, which ran under the theme “Smart, Secure, Connected,” provided a platform for stakeholders to explore innovative solutions and strategies for a digitally transformed future.

In her keynote address, she highlighted that several initiatives have been implemented by government to foster a Smart Zimbabwe.

“Zimbabwe is actively embracing the concept of creating its own future rather than relying on imports. Several initiatives have been implemented to foster a Smart Zimbabwe, including:

“A 1.5 Million Digital Skills Programme, which aligns with the African Union’s Digital Agenda, comprehensive Cyber Security Training for all citizens, the establishment of a Digital Ambassadors Program promoting digital literacy, development of Innovation Hubs and Industrial Parks at universities to stimulate entrepreneurship, and support for start-ups in AI, Fintech, and GovTech sectors,” she said.

Minister Mavetera further highlighted that steps were undertaken by the Zimbabwe government after realising the need for security.

“Recognising that no digital economy can flourish without security, Zimbabwe has also undertaken significant steps toward ensuring cybersecurity; the Cyber and Data Protection Act has been operationalised, a National Cybersecurity Strategy has been finalised and standards have been adopted in alignment with the AU Malabo Convention,” she highlighted.

According to the Minister, Zimbabwe has made significant strides in connectivity, including establishing base stations in rural areas, creating community information centers in remote districts, and expanding digital payment systems through ZiG-backed fintech solutions.

She took time to underscore the importance of unity and collaboration among stakeholders and the two countries in driving the digital agenda forward.

The Minister concluded by urging Zimbabweans to embrace learning, innovation, and partnerships, while calling on regional partners to identify and implement joint projects in key areas like cybersecurity, agri-tech, and digital commerce.

The Computer Society of Zimbabwe Summit was a powerhouse event, attended by Zambia’s Minister of Technology & Science Honourable Felix Mutati, President and Council of the Computer Society of Zimbabwe, Mr Freddy Ndlovu, Summit convenors Mr Ashley Chimhanda and Ms Sharai Dube, along with distinguished delegates, industry leaders, innovators, and esteemed guests.
