Road traffic accidents have decreased by over 240 during this festive season, largely attributed to the effective awareness campaigns and proactive measures implemented by the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police issued a statement revealing the statistics recorded from December 15 to December 26, 2024, highlighting significant trends in road safety during the festive season.

The information indicated that Zimbabwe recorded a total of 1,211 road traffic accidents this year, a notable decrease compared to 1,454 accidents during the same period last year.

The statistics revealed that the number of road traffic accidents was reduced by a margin of 243, highlighting a significant improvement in road safety this year.

In a statement to vhayeya.com, Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe Managing Director Mr. Munesu Munodawafa noted the decline in fatalities this year, attributing this positive trend to the effective traffic awareness campaigns conducted by the TSCZ in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport and other stakeholders.

“Regretably, the number of fatalities has increased by 6 for period 15 to 26 Dec compared to last year.

“But significantly, the number of accidents has gone down by over 240 over the same period.

“With the above in mind, we remain resolute and encouraged that collectively, with ZRP, VID we are making inroads in the fight against road carnage,” he said.

Another positive note is that both December 25 and December 26 recorded no public service accidents, reflecting the effectiveness of safety measures during the festive season.

The Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe launched its festive season awareness campaign in Norton on December 18, under the theme ‘Normal Speed, Meets Every Need.’

In conjunction with other stakeholders, traffic safety members were visible on major roads across the country, educating commuters and motorists, a proactive move that yielded results, as evidenced by the significant decline in road traffic accidents during the festive period.

The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Development, led by Hon. Felix Tapiwa Mhona partnered with Discovery Ambulance this festive season.

Over 20 ambulances have been deployed at tollgates within a 40 km radius to enhance traffic safety during the festive season.

Motorists are implored to be responsible and effectively contribute towards road safety in the country.
