The Ministry of Transport has today officially opened a completed section of the Mazowe Road Dualisation Project to traffic.
The Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Hon Advocate Felix Tapiwa Mhona, commissioned the stretch from Christon Bank to Blue Ridge Shops, which forms part of a broader plan to upgrade the route into a modern dual carriageway highway extending to Kanyemba Border Post.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Minister Mhona said the project goes beyond road rehabilitation and is expected to unlock economic opportunities while improving safety and connectivity.
“This project is far more than just a road upgrade. It means a modern dual carriageway highway all the way to Kanyemba Border Post, unlocking economic potential and transforming the region,” he said.
He added that the Second Republic continues to prioritise infrastructure development, giving updates on other flagship projects, including the ongoing Harare–Masvingo–Beitbridge Highway works and the rehabilitation of the Bulawayo–Victoria Falls Road.
A section of the Harare–Masvingo–Beitbridge Highway is scheduled to be opened to traffic on August 23.
The Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Mashonaland Central, Christopher Magomo, welcomed the development, saying the province stands to benefit significantly from the upgraded corridor.
“The dualisation of Mazowe Road will accelerate the region’s development, benefiting residents and businesses,” he said.
Engineers on site indicated that substantial progress has already been made, with 21,7 kilometres completed to date.
“We started this rehabilitation project from the Kanyemba Road end and we are moving positively. We expect the project to be completed by the end of this year,” an engineer said.
Motorists and public transport operators expressed satisfaction with the improved road conditions, noting reduced travel times and easier access to Harare.
Some drivers said the journey from Mazowe to Harare has been shortened to about 30 minutes, while bus operators reported smoother trips and reduced vehicle wear and tear.
The Mazowe Road Dualisation Project forms part of the Government’s broader strategy to enhance infrastructure, improve regional connectivity and stimulate economic growth in line with national development objectives.
