The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has heightened security measures across the country ahead of the 2026 Easter and Independence holidays, with authorities urging citizens to remain vigilant and law-abiding during the festive period.
In a statement issued today, the Commissioner-General of Police Stephen Mutamba said the force is fully prepared to maintain peace and order as schools close for the first term and people begin travelling for celebrations.
“As the school first term concludes and the nation braces for the 2026 Easter and Independence Day celebrations, the Zimbabwe Republic Police stands ready to ensure that peace prevails throughout the country,” said the Commissioner-General.
The police urged parents, guardians and school authorities to prioritise the safety of children, particularly during travel, warning against exposure to abuse, exploitation and drug and substance abuse.
“Parents and guardians should ensure that children are protected from abuse, exploitation and exposure to drug and substance abuse,” the statement read.
Authorities also warned that law enforcement will intensify operations targeting drug dealers and traffickers.
“The ZRP is taking decisive action on drug and substance abuse and trafficking. I urge Zimbabweans to report anyone trafficking or peddling drugs at any nearest Police Station,” said the Commissioner-General.
The Easter period is expected to see increased movement of people attending church services, family gatherings and Independence Day commemorations.
Police commanders across provinces have been directed to implement comprehensive security plans.
“I have directed all Officers Commanding Police Provinces to put in place comprehensive security arrangements to ensure the safety and security of the public,” the Commissioner-General said.
Motorists have been urged to exercise caution and adhere to road regulations, with police set to intensify roadblocks, patrols and stop-and-search operations.
“The ZRP will be on high alert and will conduct roadblocks, stop-and-search blitzes and patrols to maintain law and order throughout the holidays,” the statement said.
Police also warned against the use of unregistered and unroadworthy vehicles, adding that an ongoing operation targeting vehicles without number plates and those unlawfully fitted with beacon or blue lights will be intensified.
“The use of unregistered vehicles, including those without number plates, will not be allowed by the Police,” the Commissioner-General said, adding that offenders will face arrest “without fear or favour.”
Drivers were cautioned against speeding, overloading and dangerous driving practices, with authorities stressing that strict enforcement measures will be applied to protect lives.
“The Police will act decisively to protect lives and maintain law and order without any form of compromise or hesitation,” said the Commissioner-General.
The ZRP reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a safe holiday period through increased deployments, patrols and public awareness campaigns.
Members of the public were encouraged to report criminal activities or misconduct by police officers through the National Complaints Desk.
“I urge all Zimbabweans to remain law-abiding and responsible citizens during this period. Finally, I wish the nation and all visitors accident and crime-free Easter and Independence holidays,” the Commissioner-General said.
