The late national hero Brigadier General (Rtd) Mathias Tizirai Ngarava has been described as a selfless, dedicated, and exemplary cadre who sacrificed his life to defend the country.
Acting President Hon. Colonel (Rtd) Dr. K. C. D. Mohadi has issued a condolence message to the Ngarava family, honouring the late national hero for the immense contributions he made to the nation.
He described the late liberation war hero as a patriot who dedicated his life to defending the nation.
“He will be fondly remembered for consistently defending the Nation’s ideals before and after independence.
“His sacrifices must remain a great challenge to us all to defend the values that he stood and fought for,” said Acting President Mohadi.
His background reflects that he sacrificed his education and was courageous enough to join the liberation struggle at a tender age.
“The late Brigadier General Ngarava, whose Chimurenga name was ‘Elias Chimurenga’, abandoned his secondary education in
October 1976, to join the liberation struggle, together with four of his schoolmates. In early December 1976, Cde Ngarava risked life and limb crossing the border into Mozambique through Gonarezhou, which was heavily infested with wild animals. A true dernonstration of nation before self,” the statement said.
The late Brigadier General (Rtd) Ngarava was a well-decorated cadre who rose through the ranks with distinction until his retirement.
“After demonstrating discipline and commitment, he was sent for military training in Syria in early 1979. Upon completion of his training, he was deployed to Gaza Province, Sector Four, where he bravely operated until the country gained its Independence in 1980.
“He was attested into the Zimbabwe
National Army in February 1981 as a Sergeant and was later selected to undertake the Basic Officers Course in 1982, which led him being commissioned as Lieutenant, upon its completion. The late Brigadier General undertook various military courses leading to his elevation from the rank of Lieutenant (1982), up
to his appointment as Brigadier General in 2023, a position he held until his retirement from active service in March 2024.
“Due to his immense military contribution to the liberation of this country and conduct as a selfless, dedicated, exemplary, loyal and competent soldier, the late General Officer was awarded various medals during his career,” said Acting President Mohadi.
The late Brigadier Gen (Rtd) Ngarava will be laid to rest soon.
